The Polly Wyckoff–David Demarest Chapter, NSDAR is honored to participate in this significant historical commemoration, presented by Bergen County Executive James J. ABOUT THE BAYLOR MASSACRE

The Baylor Massacre refers to the events of September 1778, when soldiers fighting for American independence made the ultimate sacrifice. This ceremony honors those brave men and women and celebrates their enduring legacy in our nation's fight for freedom.

Attendees will have the opportunity to meet historical reenactors who bring the era to life, explore the story and significance of the September 1778 events, participate in ceremonies honoring fallen soldiers, and celebrate the legacy of independence and sacrifice. Connect with fellow history enthusiasts and community members.

OCTOBER 2026 - SOUTH CHURCH CEMETERY PATRIOTS RECOGNITION CEREMONY HONORING REVOLUTIONARY WAR HEROES

Picture
On Sunday, October 25, 2026, the Polly Wyckoff–David Demarest Chapter, NSDAR will dedicate a memorial bench honoring the brave men and women of Schraalenburgh who served and sacrificed during America's fight for independence—and who now rest in the historic cemetery of South Schraalenburgh Church in Bergenfield, New Jersey.
This meaningful ceremony will celebrate more than 23 confirmed Revolutionary War patriots buried at the site, marking a significant step in preserving local history and ensuring these patriots' contributions are remembered for generations to come.

Our chapter has undertaken a comprehensive research project to identify and honor the patriots interred at South Church Cemetery. The dedication ceremony features three components: a plaque memorial bench honoring all patriots, a digital memorial website showcasing patriot information and stories, and a virtual geocache connecting history enthusiasts to the site.
Twenty-three confirmed patriots will be honored, including members of local militia companies, prisoners of war, and patriots who served with distinction. Research by our chapter's genealogy experts has compiled records from the DAR Genealogical Records System, Find a Grave, local historical societies, and church records.

Notable patriots include members of the Demarest, Christie, DeVoe, Westervelt, Campbell, and other families whose service shaped our nation's independence.

Visit our digital memorial by clicking on our Linked Website to learn more about individual patriots, explore historical documents, and connect with this important local history.

The ceremony will be a meaningful gathering to celebrate patriotic service and community history. Whether you're a descendant, history enthusiast, or community member, we invite you to join us in honoring these heroes.
